Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
