Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
