The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
