At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
