Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
