A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
