Among the well-known Jewish advocacy and anti-hate organizations in the United States eliminated more than a thousand pages of radicalism analysis from its site on Tuesday night.
The decision followed digital criticism from conservative commentators and Elon Musk, who had targeted the organization for its recently removed “glossary of extremism”.
Information of the Deleted Database
The organization's resource included more than 1,000 entries that offered background information on organizations and ideologies connected to racist, antisemitic, and discriminatory events.
Sections detailing white supremacist organizations, paramilitary groups, and anti-Jewish theories now lead to the main page for the organization’s extremism research.
Criticism from Musk and Conservative Accounts
The tech billionaire and well-known conservative accounts on the social media platform had targeted the ADL in the past week over the glossary, which included an entry on slain far right figure Charlie Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA.
Musk also criticized the group for its entry on Christian Identity, reacting to comments on his platform that falsely conflated that extremist movement with Christians as a whole.
In reality, the term describes a ideology which believes in a racial holy war against Jews and other minorities.
The Organization's Statement on the Removal
The ADL did not directly address the backlash in its announcement on the decision and instead stated the move would allow the group to “investigate new strategies and fresh methods to present our information and display our findings more effectively”.
“With over 1,000 listings compiled over many years, the ADL Glossary of Extremism has served as a source of authoritative information on a broad spectrum of subjects for years,” the organization said in a release. “At the same time, an increasing number of listings in the database were no longer current.”
The group also noted that a number of listings were intentionally distorted and misused, and that their experts have been creating more comprehensive resources and new methods to supply information about anti-Jewish sentiment, extremism, and bigotry.
Broader Criticism and Organizational Challenges
The removal of the glossary comes as the ADL has encountered growing scrutiny in the past few years from employees and researchers over its shrinking mission to prioritize pro-Israel policies and its repeated support of Elon Musk.
The group has seen funding decline and had a senior leader step down following CEO the CEO's comments praising or supporting Musk, which has not stopped the entrepreneur from openly criticizing the group.
Original Purpose of the Glossary
The ADL launched its glossary in 2022, promoting it as a pioneering tool designed to help media, the general audience, and law enforcement understand radical organizations and their beliefs.
“We believe it is the most extensive and user-friendly reference on extremist speech now accessible to the general public,” said Oren Segal of the extremism research division in a comment at the launch. “We maintain that an informed public is critical to the defense of democracy.”
The ADL’s page containing the original press release now displays a notice stating: “You are not authorized to view this page.”
Background of Tensions with Musk
Musk has long targeted the ADL and previously vowed to take legal action against the group for its work documenting the growth of antisemitic content on his digital network.
Yet, the Anti-Defamation League and its CEO came to his defense earlier this year when other Jewish groups and lawmakers condemned what they described as him making fascist-style salutes following the former president's inauguration.
The organization labeled it as an “awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm”.
Latest Comments and Additional Initiatives
The billionaire repeatedly posted about the ADL’s listing of Kirk’s Turning Point USA in its glossary in recent days, labeling the ADL a “bigoted organization” and implying it promoted murder.
The entry for the organization did not state that the organization was an extremist organization, but featured a list of incidents of its leadership and members interacting with radicals or uttering “racist or bigoted statements”.
On Wednesday, Musk persisted to write about the ADL and repeated his claim that it was a “bigoted entity”.
He also participated in a separate conservative pressure campaign, on this occasion supporting calls to avoid Netflix because a animated shows featured a trans character.
